Directions

  1. Write the name of the lesson: Holiday Sort: Living and Non-Living File Folder Game on the front of one (1) Gifts & Lights Colorful Cut-Out. Attach the cut-out to the front of one (1)  Super Power File Folder
  2. On one (1) Super Power Library Pocket, write: Living and attach it to the inside top left of the file folder. On one (1) Super Power Library Pocket write: Non-Living and attach it to the inside bottom left of the file folder. 
  3. On one (1) Large Christmas Light Cut-Out, write: Is it living or non-living? Attach the bottom section of the cut-out to the inside top right of the file folder so that it creates a pocket.  
  4. On one (1) Large Christmas Light Cut-Out, write: Bonus - for each living item, roll the dice and complete the activity. Attach the bottom section of the cut-out to the inside bottom right of the file folder so that it creates a pocket. 
  5. On Holiday Mix Mini Colorful Cut-Outs, write a variety of Christmas and Winter related words (for example, elf, tree, presents, etc.). Place these mini cut-outs into the Is it living or non-living? Christmas Light Cut-Out pocket. 
  6. Write 6 questions on Holiday Mix Mini Colorful Cut-Outs. (for example, 1. What is its habitat?, 2. What does it need to survive?, 3. What does it eat?). Place these in the Bonus Question Christmas Light pocket. 
  7. Place the numbers 1-6 from the Holly Gift Calendar Cover Ups in pockets of one (1) Differentiated Instruction Cubes Manipulative

Instructions

Have students first sort all of the cards into the Living and Non-Living library pockets. Then, have students roll the cube for each card in the living pile and answer the corresponding numbered question from the bonus pile.

Students can complete this activity at their desks for quiet time, at a science center, or in small group instruction.
