Get Ready! Get Set! Go!: Easing into Hybrid Learning

Posted by By Leigh Ann Pernell on Aug 3rd 2020

The pandemic has changed the landscape of back to school, but quality learning is still the goal. Leaders are striving to make good decisions that will best serve our children in this ever changing COVID-19 climate. The hope is to be back in the classroom, but we will most likely be facing a combination of online and onsite learning. This hybrid learning situation can be tricky, but there are some things we can do to prepare our children for quality learning.

Be positive!

Children will follow the lead of their families and teachers. Be a positive role model and focus on what we can do, rather than what we cannot. Quality learning experiences are everywhere—not just in a classroom.

Be flexible!

New information is coming our way every day regarding COVID-19. Try to stay flexible and know that as the information changes, our learning plans will probably change too. Flexibility and resilience are life skills that will serve students well in this ever changing world, both now and after the pandemic has passed. Helping our children learn to deal with setbacks will build creative problem solvers that persist rather than give up when things don’t go as planned.

Be ready!

Get ready for school to begin! Build excitement by gathering supplies and setting up a special workplace. Whether in the classroom or at home, students will need crayons, pencils, paper, and other items to keep learning alive. Discovery is children’s work, and we can help them by setting up a conducive site for learning discoveries to be made at home. Creating a well-stocked workplace for our children will provide them with a focus spot for their homework and their online learning.

Be informed!

As parents and teachers, we must stay informed and share the important facts with our kids in meaningful and appropriate ways. Use child-friendly language that empowers children rather that worries them. We can share mandated safety measures in positive ways. Explain and model the importance of hand washing, face coverings, and the cleaning of materials for health and safety.

Be excited about learning!

When children see that we value learning, they will follow our lead. Model the fact that even as adults, we are still learning. There is no greater gift to share with young ones than to inspire a lifelong love for learning.
